artist statement.

I am a musician working within the ambient and instrumental genre to explore themes of nostalgia and longing. My primary medium is my acoustic guitar, which I use to perform stream-of-consciousness, improvised musical ideas in different keys. These ideas are recorded using my condenser microphone and then edited and mixed together in music software in order to create an ambient piece.

 

In these ambient pieces, each improvisation represents a different type of longing; one for a memory of the past that the mind has embellished over time, and one for a vision of the future.

 

The choice to record the improvisations in different keys reflects the duality between the past and the future when considered on their own. The goal of my work is to reveal the hidden harmony between these two experiences within the human mind, and ask some paradoxical questions: can we be eager for something that has already happened? Can we be nostalgic for something that hasn’t happened yet?
